A project that works to build an enlightened generation for a more peaceful country

Ethiopia has been stressed for several years now by growing trends of interethnic (over 80 ethnic groups) and interreligious tensions, including incidents of deadly/brutal communal violence and violent mob attacks against minorities in various parts of the country and then of course the more recent armed conflict in the north of the country again based on ethnic tensions. The political power play coupled with the powerful use of social media as a means to mobilize forces of violence targeting young people without the proper understanding of the greater good has resulted in many of the instigated conflicts that have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and in billions of dollars worth of economic damages. Furthermore, intensifying the conflict is a multi-layer crisis with the COVID-19 pandemic and an inflamed dispute with Egypt and Sudan over the massive Ethiopian dam project, known as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

“If people can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

Through Rotary’s mission, we work in building knowledge by creating open dialouge for peacebuilding

Peace is a cornerstone of Rotary’s mission. Rotary is approaching the concept of peace with greater cohesion and inclusivity, broadening the scope of what is meant by peacebuilding, and finding more ways for people to get involved. Rotary creates environments where peace can happen. Through Selamawi, we engage in peacebuilding and conflict resolution which includes media and communications – messages delivered in multiple languages that seek to promote dialogue and understanding on key issues in society and seek to promote reconciliation processes.  An integral component of the project will be using social media communications delivered in multiple languages to promote dialogue and understanding on key issues in the society and using traditional cultural practices to resolve differences

Our Programs

IEP Positive Peace Ambassadors Program

In Partnership with The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the Rotary Clubs in Ethiopia are implementing a positive peace program aimed at providing in-depth understanding, resources, and tools to communicate positive messages and action via innovative peace research. The program targets youth, artists, journalists and influencers from all over the country to engage in using the learnings to activate peace through peace messaging and enhancing the capacity of individuals and communities to promote social harmony and resiliency.

Sustainable Environment Project

Building resilient and strong communities is more important than ever, especially in the face of conflict. Hence, our program focuses on strengthening local communities to improve the environment through initiatives such as sharing resources, establishing community gardens, working on local clean-ups, and planting trees. River cleanings in Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar and Jimma have taught us that riverine communities can be brought together through our continued presence, the interaction of coffee ceremonies and the transfer of skills through workshops.

Digital Peace Visibility Project

At present multiple hate speeches, videos and images are continuously published and circulating among communities on social media. In deeply understanding this as a main source of mobilizing forces for instigating violence, our program focuses on using the power of social media to dilute the current hate speech by creating a culture of positive online peace dialogue, and resiliency to counter growing ethnic hate and violence in Ethiopia. Messages developed in three local languages have been disseminated targeting nationwide audiences in which above 400,000 people have been reached and engaged through Facebook.
